Uncompressed Episode 32

Thank you for joining us for our illustrious Episode 32 of Uncompressed. This is the second episode using our new, segmented format — we hope you enjoy it!

Before giving you the deluge of links, I wanted to point out that Uncompressed has started using Podpress to distribute our MP3s. Because of this you will no longer see the monsterous, gross, links near the top half of the show notes. Instead, there is a neat little Podpress bar way down at the bottom by the comments section. If you have trouble using this new bar for downloading the shows please let us know.

So, without further ado…

Hey Guys - Great Show! I can’t get over the graphics in “Alan Wake” the environment looks fantastic. I need to get on the ball and upgrade my Machine for the next generation of gaming goodness!

Yo Shakka! Looking forward to getting you back on the program. Looks like your Mets did alright the other day — im suprised you could listen to the show with the hangover you must have had today ;)

Alan Wake did look pretty amazing. Considering that was running on a single GeForce card (and a single core one at that, no GX2…) I think it gives a lot of hope that the future of computer architechture as a WHOLE will increase realism and immersion — not just the latest graphics “tricks”. It seemed as though for a while the CPU was being thought of just for driving AI and some occasional physics while the video card did all the legwork — but now with multiple cores developers can really flex some muscle running complex physics, sound, and even offloading some graphics (such as 2D rendering) onto the individual cores.

    On the Shottings/Games.

I believe what started it all, in the columbine shooting, they say they used a modification of the game to practice the shootings, with faces of people on the game models, etc.

To me this was one case, and an abuse of what the game was originally for. Also they listened to metal, so that was blamed. Everything to place blame aside from parents, or whatever metal illness with these kids.

I think just because this is now a part of younger Generation of life, they feel they have to place the blame on that.

We could blame movies as much as we can blame games for all the killings. Fact of the matter, no matter the age, there are those who, have whatever problem, which makes them crazy or out of reality. Blaming it on anything like, games or TV or any technology, may as you say, serve as a catalyst, but isn’t the actual cause of the person committing the act. We can see people of all ages and cultures, who don’t have the same lives, still end up committing these gross acts.

Just irritates me that Media and few public, who probably don’t really even play/understand this technology/entertainment, place blame on it. I don’t think this is going to go anywhere though. When you actually ask gamers, who actually buy, play, and support the industry, they don’t agree that games are the cause of life’s problems.

Oh and Tony, you were right:
    SliSir (Slicer)

    Like, hacker, slicing though code.

Where Slee came from, Thank my friend Ego.

He liked to annoy me by calling it that, because the play on spelling, if you take it literal, sounds like sleesir.

Even if they went so far as to modify game files to put faces of people they knew on to charachters, it shows a whole level of crazy that isnt displayed by the average gamer. I mean heck, I could print out pictures of a bunch of people I wanted to kill, tape them to the neighborhood dogs and then go do a bit of “practice” — but it wasnt the dogs that made me go nuts (except that they do talk to me… taunting me… damn those dogs…)

I think you and I are in agreement Sli, so there isnt really a need for me to rant; I just think that really, no matter WHAT the argument is about video games and music until they show indisputable CAUSATION and not just CORRELATION between the games and the crimes there are tons of parallel arguments that can be made.

Oh, and about the name thing? Drakken: 1, Floyd: 0

    Thanks for listening! ;)
