Uncompressed Episode 28
Tony, Thom and Sean to talk about Movies, Video Games and tons of internet videos out this week.
Some of the highlights on this weeks show included a discussion about our new podcast - Tipcast, Clerks 2, AMD buying ATI, RIAA lawsuits, Penny Arcade Expo and tons of other fun stuff!
Tipcast
Tipcast Settle the debate — listen to Tipcast episodes one and post if you hear the “dot-com” in “tipcast-at-gmail-dot-com”!
Games
- Undying scared the crap out of me.
- Prey Circa 1998
Movies
- Grab the iTunes commentary for Clerks 2 — and read about the dust-up with Joel Siegal
- The Dark Knight! Cool news about the new Batman flick!
News
- AMD buys ATI
- Shawn Hogan vs. the RIAA
- RIAA forced to drop download case. Very interesting news.
The assumption being made is that the use of an IP address as evidence against file sharers is not enough to prove that the person being charged committed copyright infringement.

What is the “Coming Soon” plugin?
August 3rd, 2006 at 10:01 am
NOTE: I know what the “Comming Soon” plugin does … I am looking for “where I can find it”

You are a little off on how the south uses “coke” … it’s not “sprite coke” it’s a “sprite”,
If you ask for a Mountain Dew, you will get a Mountain Dew.
If you ask for a Coke, you will either get a Coke or you will get asked “what type”.
Now, if you are at a restaurant that serves Pepsi products and ask for a Coke you will either receive a Pepsi or get asked “is Pepsi ok?” That depends more on the person behind the counter.
This is also changing a little, at least in middle TN.

The plugin’s actually called “Countdown”. Grab it here: http://redalt.com/wiki/Countdown

Hi Nation, thanks for listening.
Thom has the “Coming Soon” section squirrled away underneath the google ads in the sidebar. The sidbear is becoming a bit congested (even with our polls plugin being broken right now…) and we have had a few dialogs about revamping the sidebar a bit — just nothing too serious yet.
As far as the Coke thing, thanks for the clarification. I was playing it up a bit to get the concept across, but I appreciate you laying the facts out for us.
Its just weird as heck to me… I suppose the same thing could be said about other brand names like kleenex, or jell-o, that are often used as a broad term, but the coke one always escaped me…
Also, speaking of weird language — here in wisconsin we call drinking fountains (like in schools and public buildings) “bubblers”. It causes some issue with our neigbors to the south because here in Milwaukee its a bubbler, but in Chicago its a “water fountain”. When confronted by someone from Chicago I usually reply “A bubbler is what you drink from, a water fountain is what homeless people bathe in” — that usually shuts them up.
Cheers.

There is totally no “dot com”

What do you use to record Skype? I was using Powergramo and I recently switched to Hot Recorder. I’m having issues w/ both programs as far as sound quality goes. Any suggestions?

Tony uses Audition to record the show.
I would recommend Audacity if you’re looking to do it with free/open source software.

I have used Audacity, but I plan on playing with Total Recorder (I think this is the link: http://www.highcriteria.com/ )
I learned about it in this post: http://www.thinkvitamin.com/features/blogs/podcasting-with-skype
It was written by one of these guys: http://www.web20show.com
The reason this appeals to me is it will allow me to record the local stuff with Audacity and the incoming Skype stuff on a different track.

I know that people in Seattle call soda “pop”, and I have a friend from Detroit who calls it the same thing. I figured that people in Wisconsin would call it pop also… do you ever hear it called that, Tony?
Also, there isn’t any dot com in the first episodes of Tipcast. =)
One more thing, I totally agree with Thom -
Pirates 2 disappointed the crap out of me.

I have Audacity… I just had no idea it was possible to record a Skype conference call w/ it.
August 3rd, 2006 at 8:55 pm
I mean Audition.
August 3rd, 2006 at 10:29 pm
Evan,
If youre using a USB mic, its very easy. Just set channel 1 in audition to record your mic. Set channel 2 to record the wave out from your soundcard. That setup should record every single sound your PC makes — including the voice of the person coming in over skype. Just make sure to turn off other things to avoid stray sounds (Like when you heard me get email in the middle of this ep :P)
If you are using a creative card, you also need to go into the creative audio panel and switch the far right “recording” column to either “what u hear” or “wave”.
Thats a super simplistic version how how to do it — there are more steps — but hopefully you get the idea.

Tyler:
No one around here calls it pop. Ive heard some people from up in the north woods call it that, but in the greater Milwaukee area, its soda.
