Uncompressed Episode 26
We had a wonderful time recording, and producing, episode twenty six of Uncompressed for your listening pleasure! Somehow, Tony and Thom managed to convince Sean to join them to talk about the usual movie/video game/tech topics. Sean felt a bit overwhelmed by T&T’s ginormous brains until he found out they dont actually have a clue what the hell they are talking about.
Some of the highlights on this weeks show included a discussion about what everyone is playing/watching, more on Thom’s Xbox 360 purchase, the history of “Hot Coffee”, and the horror of Sean’s scratched PSP.
For those intellectual types listening to the program you may wish to ponder: Was Napoleon Dynamite a good movie? Does Crysis represent the next coming of Christ? Could Tony see the future with his HD-DVD predictions? Does Mario Lopez have an “AC Slater” chip embedded in his brain? The answer to these and more, on this week’s Uncompressed!

The 28 Day Slater thing was pretty good! I had a few peeps in the office check it out and we had some laughs.

Nice show, guys! A couple thoughts:
Thom, I dunnoo what you are talking about, those shadow mario levels in Mario Sunshine are quite possibly the best thing they’ve done with the Mario franchise ever! They were so fun! I would buy a game with just levels like that. Well, I guess it’d get boring after a while, but they were fun in the game!
Napoleon Dynamite: biggest movie let-down for me. Ever. ‘Nuff said.
I’m so stoked about the TOC meet later this year, lots of DS fun! Good job again!

I am hoping to score Meteos finally during that “unadvertised” Circuit City $9 clearance sale
At least I have two chances with the two CC’s around us Thom, amirite?

Patch, I was thinking the SAME thing when I read the list the other day on Digg!
June 28th, 2006 at 10:04 am
There’s one down in York too.
I keep reading conflicting reports that make me want to run out and try my luck. I think corporate CC wants the stores to pull all the games until July 2nd, but from what I’ve read a couple people have wandered into their local stores and found clearance bins full of the games now.

I am hopefully going to try the Carlisle Pike one tonight, if time permits.
Also, no Prey demo talk in the new episode? Sup with that?
Best demo I have played in a long time, you guys need to try it out (or I guess wait for the 360 demo to come out).

I hadn’t played the Prey demo when we did the last show, but I got it this week and was definitely going to talk about it. It’s great!

I downloaded a played the Prey demo. I thought it was pretty good however; I think I’m going to need to upgrade my video card really soon. Any suggestions? I’m currently using a Geforce FX 5600 266 AGP and it doesn’t seem to cutting it anymore.

Thom,
What are you running for a vid card these days? I working with an OLD Radeon 9800 256mb card and I am afraid that my PC will fall victim to “PREY”.
Tony, I am gunna get cracking on upgrading my rig. I will be taking you up on you offer to assist the n00btard over here

I’m running a BFG Tech 6800OC (nVidia obviously). It’s served me well the last couple years. The pain about upgrading is that AGP is obsolete and it’s going to be tough finding a new board.
I played the Prey demo last night on the 360 and I gotta say … I’m probably going to go PC on this one (it’ll probably be $20 cheaper and ultimately I’m still a mouse + keyboard guy at heart), but if I was looking at spending $400 in PC upgrades any time soon, you might want to start thinking about grabbing a 360.
With Vista coming, I’m not putting jack into PC hardware. With Vista requiring 2GB RAM to play games, I’m going to wait for it to hit and buy a new PC that’s DirectX 10 compatible so I can play Crysis on it. I’m sure that RAM prices are going to drop like rocks once Vista comes out since 1GB is going to be the standard.

I was thinking about buying a new machine anyways. I was in Best Buy the other night and most of the HP desktops came w/ 2gb of ram already. The prices seemed pretty decen though - the HP I fell in love with was like $1,000 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7726026&type=product&productCategoryId=cat15108&id=1140391940047″ and I figure if I were to build it myself - it would probably cost about that anyways. I’d probably still need to throw in a new video card into that HP though.

It’s kind of wild what you can buy off the shelf these days. The fact that it’s HP worries me a little bit, but to get up and running quickly it looks like it’s a pretty good deal.
I keep thinking about running out and buying a Windows Media Center box to throw on the LAN to use in conjunction with my shiny new 360. We have two Tivos as well as a bunch of ripped DVDs and stuff on the LAN that I can watch on my hacked Xbox, but not on the 360 and it’s driving me nuts.
I was thinking about a system from Dell through one of the deal sites and selling off the LCD. This is a prime example: http://slickdeals.net/#p7727 . You get a XPS 400 with a 24″ LCD for $1053. You should be able to recoup a chunk of that by selling off the LCD on Craigslist or something.
I’m sure you know about http://www.slickdeals.com and http://www.gotapex.com , but if you don’t, they’re awesome places to find deals on computer hardware. If I was in the market for a PCI-E card, I’d be all over this deal — http://slickdeals.net/#p7726 — it’s a GeForce 7900 GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card for $207 after rebate. (It’s expired now unfortunately… you have to act fast when using those deal sites!)
July 4th, 2006 at 12:02 pm
Correction to Thom’s comment, its actually http://www.slickdeals.net not .com. There are other sites too, http://www.woot.com, http://www.passwird.com, http://www.fatwallet.com, http://www.dealsea.com, http://www.xpbargains.com
…Im sure there are more than that!

Also, having worked as a repair technician for many years — I didnt see any more HP units come into the shop as compared to any other brand. The only pain though, is the way HP tattoos thier motherboards and writes a DMA section to the hard drive — makes it hard to replace parts with anything other than official HP stock.
That all being said, HP/Compaq were also the easiest to repair in warranty, out of warranty, and under extended warranty. The part availibility was great from all of our vendors regarding HP parts, ordering direct from HP was always quick, and if you had a problem you just coundnt get worked out thier partner support for technicians was better than any other vendor.

I’ll probably end up building it myself…. which is always fun… hunting for parts and what not.
Going off topic for a second, I received hate mail from someone who apparently listed to a podcast that I do…. “RE: Justin & Matt Show. childish topics….if we are lucky in 20 years you will look back and realize what a waste you were and do something besides take up oxygen on the planet, - even plants give back something.”
Isn’t that awesome?
July 4th, 2006 at 5:25 pm
listened… opps!
July 4th, 2006 at 7:48 pm
haha! I don’t think we’ve gotten any hate mail yet.
