Sony’s PlayStation 3 E3 event

Check out Engadget & Joystiq’s live coverage of Sony’s PlayStation 3 E3 event.

Here’s a pic of the best thing I got out of the press conference:

PS3 Controller

They de-boomeranged the controller and returned to the DualShock shape we all know and love, and apparently added something a little special at the same time:

The controller’s got X-Y-Z, pitch, roll, yaw, lateral motion detection.

Looks like Sony’s taking a page from the Nintendo playbook there.

Pricing was announced as well:

“Today we’re pleased to announce the global PS3 launch details. We will make PS3 available via a two-configuration plan. One with a 60GB HD. And the other with a 20GB hard drive. Japan’s date: Nov. 11. In Japan 59,800 Yen. The 60GB PS3 will have an open price which retailers will set. In North America: 20GB for $499, 60GB for $599. Europe has 20GB for 499 Euro, 60GB for 599 Euro. 2 million to ship worldwide during the launch window. 4 million by end of calendar year 2006. By March 31, 2007 they’ll have shipped 6 million worldwide.

I think my wallet just exploded. lol

Well, that settles it in my mind. Who can afford a $600 console, and then shell out $200 more probably for games and more controllers and such? Most kids and married gamers can’t afford that.I think (hope) that Nintendo will be coming back in terms of market share by this time next year.

Also, I’m disappointed Sony didn’t take a chance with their controller. I thought they’d at least be able to come up with something different and cool looking. But my opinion shouldn’t really count in this area, cause I think I can count the number of hours I’ve played on a playstation on one hand.

Well they did copy Nintendo with the motion sensing — so some might consider that a chance. Also, they dropped the rumble feature as it screwed up the sensing. But in light of all this Nintendo announces that thier controller will have a SPEAKER in it? wtf? Speculation is that the speaker with make sword “slash” sounds or gunfire sounds as you do the appropriate action on screen. This is just getting crazy!

I doubt that’s the case. I think the real they dropped the rumble feature because Immersion sued over the rumble feature in the last two iterations of the DualShock and Sony got their ass handed to them.

As for that Wii speaker thing — is that true? lol

  5. Tony Says:

I read that they dropped the rumble feature due to sensing issues, AND the thing about the speaker on digg.com articles last night but there is so much E3 stuff coming down I cant find the ones I was looking at…

Here is one site I found also reporting the speaker function: http://www.lakituslair.com/Post10004.aspx although I dont know how reliable that is. Another site was speculating that instead of a speaker it might have a mic feature similar to the one on the DS. Rumor mill is out of control…

  6. Tony Says:

It appears the speaker is confirmed as its on the feature list for Twilight Princess. http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/09/zelda-twlight-princess-wii-features-revealed/

  7. Uncompressed » Blog Archive » Zelda: Twilight Princess Says:

[...] Joysitq runs down the features here where as the official site is a bit less than informative… One of the more interesting features mentioned in the write-up is that: “The Wii’s internal speaker will deliver ‘depth of sound’ with weapons like the bow (and presumably the hookshot and boomerang … no PS3 controller jokes please)” Of course that goes along with the discussion Thom and I were having over in the Playstation controller post. If you want to see the game in action, its highlighted under the “Gripping Games” link of the Wii website (also in the video you can hear the sounds produced by the wiimote speaker) — although if you do watch the video I think the coolest part is the “Red Steel” swordfight… I don’t care how lame Thom thinks Wii swordfights will be… Share and Enjoy:These icons link to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and discover new web pages. RUMBLE AND MOTION SENSING CAN EXIST. Sony just refuses to PAY for it!!!!!!

Whether you like rumble or not, Sony should atleast give us the option. The REAL reason why Sony took rumble out was because they are being SUED by Immersion Corporation because Sony STOLE their technology in PS2. Immersion is willing to help Sony with the PS3 controllers so that rumble and motion detection can coexist, but Sony is just ignoring them, feeling that YOU the consumer, won’t really care in the end. Immersion is just a small company, and all they want is to get paid their fair share (Microsoft paid them, so this is why they can use rumble in Xbox). Rumble or not, Sony will make BILLIONS off of the PS3. To put this into perspective, the top Sony executives make MILLIONS of dollars every year. But they refuse to pay Immersion so that in the end, it is the consumer that suffers. All of that so that the people up top in Sony can can use hundred dollar bills as toliet paper. We need to demand that Sony put in rumble into the new controller. Whether you like it or not, you should be getting it with the console if you are paying $600 for it. There is always the option to turn the damn rumble off if you don’t like it. Come on Sony! Stop screwing the gamers…..
