How-to Submit an Audio Comment

Tony came up with the idea of having people sending in audio files to ask questions and make comments and it could turn out to be one of the best ideas ever made, or the worst. ;) With Episode X coming up this week, I’d really love to get a few audio questions/comments about the show.

In case there was someone out there who wants to make an audio comment but doesn’t know how, I thought I’d write up a couple notes to show you how you can make your own mp3 file to email into the show, or post on your own host and link to from the uncompressed.org comments.

UPDATE: Now there’s a third option — phone in your question! Check out Audio Comments Made Easy for more information.

For this little tutorial, I’m going to use a neat piece of free open source application called Audacity, which you can download from Audacity’s home page on Sourceforge.net. Make sure to download and install the excellent open source mp3 encoder LAME as well. Instructions for downloading and installing LAME doing so are also avaliable on Audacity’s site.

Once you get everything installed, make sure your mic’s hooked up and fire up Audacity.

Actually recording your question could be simple, or it could be a giant pain in the behind.

Let’s be optimistic

Hook up your mic, click the record button (it’s the one with the red dot) and start talking. If you see the line update as you talk, you’re in luck — it’s working. All you have to do is create a new file, ask your question/make your comment, play it back to make sure you’re loud enough/not too loud, then save your file and email it to uncompressedshow@gmail.com.

It’s not working :(

This is where it gets interesting. And by “interesting” I mean “totally sucky”.

Post a comment here, or IM one of your intrepid hosts and we’ll try to help you figure out what’s going on. :)

    Hi everyone

I cannot play any song because it indicates that “cannot open the audio device”. I have lost my volume controller. When I am trying to open it says, that there are no mixer active devices available.

I opened sound, video and game controller, legacy audio driver, properties and than AUDIO for avance Avance AC97, MIDI for Avance AC97 audio, MIXER for Avance AC97 audio, All of them indicate that “Cannot load the Avance AC97 audio driver. The driver file may be missing. Try to reinstall.

I don’t have CD. Could I solve this problem through net?

    Thanks in advance

Hi Safi, thanks for visiting. It sounds like you are using onboard audio. I would go to your motherboard manufacturers website and look up the model of your motherboard. From there, you should be able to download the newest drivers for your sound device and reinstall it.

9 times out of 10 that will solve your problem.

    Cheers.
