What about people who want to leave their WiFi open on purpose?

  3. Tony Says:

According to the article, they want to do away with that as well. They cite piracy, crime, and violation of tos agreements as reasons to eliminate this practise. Somehow we forgot it above, but the link to the article is http://news.com.com/Unsecured+Wi-Fi+would+be+outlawed+by+N.Y.+county/2100-7351_3-5934194.html?part=rss&tag=5934194&subj=news not sure if wordpress will auto link that, if it doesnt ill come back and fix it later — need to dash off to class. Thanks for the question Phill. Cheers.

I just wanted to clarify further, this particular article (there is more than one, I happened to have this link handy) states: “First, “public Internet access” may not be provided without a network gateway server equipped with a firewall.” now, that would seem to still allow public hotspots so long as it had protection going to “the internet”. However, as we all know politicians live and die by the way they define things, in this case they are defining the use of a firewall as protecting and preventing network access, not just INTERnet access. The verbage being proposed is rather vague, but the reason they want to enact this is to combat a slew of “hackings” that have occured at banks and other financial institutions that are federally “insured”. They are trying to force the network admins at these locations to take wireless security seriously, but as with most laws surrounding technology, the strokes are very broad as the legislators don’t have have a strong grasp on how the technology works.

This is a bit preemptive, since I haven’t listend to EP3, yet, but I noticed it covers Sony’s DRM crap, and I noticed this,

Good show so far ;) I’m still listening lol.

I like the Mac tidbit… being a user myself ;P

My last Mac was a mini. If you were looking for one, I would suggest waiting for the possible Intel Mini, going with the cheaper 256mb of ram, and going with the optional internal bluetooth/wireless card. I upgraded to a 1GB stick, which was sorely needed. Currently it is equipped with poor onboard video (ATi 9200 w/32mb), w/o the extra RAM, the video is the bottleneck. So hopefully when they revamp the mini, it will have better video, maybe a 6800 Geforce Go?

Anyways, now that I’m on a Powerbook, I’m definitely interested in the Intel switch, and the possibilities with that.

Otherwise, regarding using the Mac OS experience, I switched becuase I wanted a laptop, that was work-oriented, dependable, and seamless. Very ubern00b interface IMO.

    Interesting read about switchers.

Good stuff so far guys, it’s very entertaining :) If I can actually think of something useful to contribute, I’ll send you an e-mail ;)

Thanks for listening ego. If I would have bought a mini I would have upgraded the ram as well. The other thing I would have done is swapped the harddrive with a 7200RPM version as I always found the drive it ships with to be painfully slow (Ive worked on several of the them even though I dont own one). But at that point, after adding all the extra crap it kinda defeats the purpose of getting a mini (the price) so I sit and wait, while spending copius amounts of money on PC upgrades. ;)

Dont listen to Ego …. mac user … ppfffttt…. :)

Great show. I didnt know know about Sony and thier current brand of crap. I will have to be more alert to what I put into my ‘puter.

Glad to see thom didnt say “stupid” as often as he normally does :P I almost feel famous (or infamous) being mentioned more often than Liminal :) I’ll try not to let it mellow my normally grumpy self.

    Later guys
